Osteno
A little village over the banks of Ceresio lake (another name for Lugano lake), is in the area of Como, but is included in the diocese of Milano, which means that Ambrosian rite is followed. Altogether with Claino, Barclaino, Righeggia and Rescia, makes up the community of Claino con Osteno. The town hall building is in Osteno. It is one of the 15 villages in Val d’Intelvi.
On a naturalistic side, since the 19th century Osteno has been famous for it’s “Orrido”, an impressive and sublime canyon made up mainly of calcareous rocks and that can be reached only by boat, along the river Telo. Among the others, the cave of Rescia and the Santa Giulia waterfall are worth visiting. In the paleontological area (Caslè neighbourhoods) was found a Jurassic fossil, called “Ostenocaris Cypriformis”.
Many artists were born in Osteno: Comolo di Goffredo; the families Bregno, Buora, Sormani, Comanedi, Della Porta, Solari and Giuseppe de’ Pietri are worth quoting.
There are some artistic buildings: the parish Church of Saint Peter and Paul, where the statue “ Virgin with child ” by Andrea Bregno is preserved, the frescos painted in renaissance style, the baroque sculpture of Giovanni Battista Barberini and two paintings by Federico Ferrario; the mannerist church of saint Rocco; many murals, dated from the 15th trough the 18th century.
