Andrea Bregno

Andrea Bregno (Osteno 1418-Rome 1503), sculptor and architect. Was born in the neighbourhood of Righeggia, his siblings Ambrogio and Girolamo were also sculptors. He is the most important Lombard sculptor of the 14th century, together with Giovanni Dalmata and Luigi Capponi. His family was mostly composed of artists and was one of the most famous of the area, he was apprenticed to the father Cristoforo Bregno in Ferrara. In the parish church of saint Peter and Paul there is his marble statue “Virgin with child”,in a tabernacle dated 1464 in a side altar. He worked and had fame during the pontificate of Sisto IV. He worked on both wall tombs(the craze of the age) and architectural projects. Around the year of 1496 he met Michelangelo, who was just a young sculptor at that time; anyway Bregno had a great influence over Michelangelo.
