The Quartascia
During the fourth Sunday of January in Osteno it’s celebrated the Quartascia, an holiday dedicated to the Lady of the belt( Madonna della cintura). Once a year the lady’s baldachin is taken out from the store room attached to the church(where it is stored the whole year long) and carried by the young boys of the town( they used to be the draftees) inside the church. Once the statue is settled in the church the boys go to the bell tower and play a special bell concert; meanwhile the women of the village put a belt on the arms of the Lady and a crown over her head and over the one of the Child.
A procession follows, during which the boys carry the statue to the war memorial walked by the village band group(la Garibaldina). The procession stops at the war memorial, close to the main square, then goes back to the church.
The statue of the “Lady with the belt” was made at the end of the 1600s, beginning of the 1700s. It is made by embossed golden and silvery copper. It was renewed at the end of the 1980’s.
