Bregno's works in Osteno

In the parish church of Saint Peter and Paul in Osteno there are two of the main works of Andrea Bregno; the Virgin with child and the Tabernacle.
The tabernacle is in the left side of the presbytery. It is dated September 3rd 1464, supposedly Bregno made it during a back-home trip to Osteno from Rome, where he was living at that time.
His masterpiece is at the end of the left aisle just over an altar: the “Virgin with child”. The sculpture was situated in the church when Bregno made the tabernacle. In fact Bregno  made it in Rome(1463-1464) and then moved it to Osteno later on. The altar, the Virgin and the sculptures of the Saints on their sides are probably to be considered as a whole self-committed work, due to the special devotion of Bregno to the Lady. The statue was probably initially sketched by some regional artists(supposedly Bregno’s family members). Furthermore what makes us guess that the statue was made during the Roman period is the high level style, completely different from the one fashionable in the valley. The “Virgin with child” turns out to be a benchmark in Bregno’s artistic life.
